I decided to monkey around with this design for a while and this is the result! As you turn the crank, the monkey bashes the cymbals together to create the harmonious sound of plastic colliding with plastic.
The bottom-left (looking at the front of the monkey) gear may need to be offset a little bit to get the mechanism properly working.
